SCREAM DREAM begins with the image of a nubile young woman with elaborate nails sleeping in her bed.   Suddenly, a pair of demonic hands reach up and grab her and pull down her top.   Then, as she screams (and screams and screams...,) a chainsaw blade slices up through the mattress, moving slowly but surely toward the hapless young lady, ending her short life!

Sound scary?   It is! (yeah, right...,)   But never fear!   It's just heavy metal queen Michelle Shock's (not to be confused with that gentle folkie, Michelle Shocked) shocking video, "Scream Dream", which is tearing up the charts and attracting lots and lots of attention!   The video contains lots of gruesome images of bloody mayhem, which has earned the scrutiny of media watchdog and church groups.   Add to this the fact that Michelle herself is rumored to be an occultist and satanist, AND fans have begun disappearing after her shows, and the media attention on Michelle Shock is becoming VERY hot!

Too hot, it would seem, for the band's manager, who decides his life would be a lot easier if he didn't have to deal with the controversial Michelle.   He sumarily fires Michelle, and hires another singer to replace her.   Meantime, Michelle embarks upon a course of revenge, using her black magical powers to get even with everyone who has displaced her!   And if THAT'S not enough trouble for one band to handle, new singer Jamie turns out to be more than she originally appears!   Add to THAT a pesky reporter who just won't leave the band's manager alone, and a hokey but murderous "demon creature hand puppet" prowling about, and I sense BIG trouble ahead!

But fellow band member Derek senses something is amiss, and he is determined to find out what.   But will Derek figure out the dark secret in time, or will the rock and roll hall run red with gore??

RATING:

This movie is WAY too low budget to be very entertaining.   All the sets are too dark to really see what is happening, and the props and effects are hokey;   plus, the film makers don't seem to be aware of this, since the camera lingers way too long on the effects, just to be sure the viewer fully recognizes their "hokiness".   Naturally, the acting is wretched as well, and the actor who plays Derek sounds like Jethro Bodine!   I suppose the plot could have been interesting, had it been articulated better, but as it is the points are never explained well enough for the viewer to figure out exactly what's going on.   And most of the band members are REALLY dorky looking, which bugs me.   Still, the movie DOES have some amusing moments (both intentional and unintentional), and I kinda liked the dark, creepy vibe.   Plus, it makes ROCKTOBER BLOOD high budget by comparison, so it earns an extra head bob for that!

In the opening scene, a young woman gets her top torn off, exposing her breasts.   Later, Jamie removes her top to seduce Derek, and again while undergoing her "transformation".

SCENES THAT MAKE ME GO "HMMM...,":

1. Michelle Shock's manager decides that she is "too controversial" and fires her, while the band's record is tearing up the charts and playing to sold-out halls.   Can ANYONE recall an instance in the last twenty-five years where a moneymaking band member was fired for being TOO controversial??   Marilyn Manson would've had a VERY short career if that were the case!

2. Why is there a "Keep Out" sign on the INSIDE of Michelle/Jamie's dressing room door?

3. Derek informs new singer Jamie that the band's fans are "hard core heavy metal freaks", that "think Van Halen is elevator music."   And they think this is real heavy metal??!   Slayer fans would turn over in their graves!

4. The band's manager sends Jamie over to Michelle's house to gather some clothing changes.   I guess he (and she) hadn't noticed that Jamie is much taller and bigger than Michelle!

5. Why do the guys who are getting head in this movie always look like Stevie Wonder?
